The Wiangaree Store

The Wiangaree Store

The Wiangaree Store, situated in the small village of Wiangaree near Kyogle in northern New South Wales, Australia, has been an integral part of the local community's development for many years. The region surrounding Wiangaree was first settled in the mid-1800s, with agriculture—particularly dairy farming and timber—forming the backbone of the area's economy. As the settlement expanded, the need for a local store to supply essential goods and provisions became apparent. Over time, the Wiangaree Store emerged as a key pillar of both the local economy and social life.

Ownership of the store has changed hands several times, with each new owner adapting the business to meet the evolving needs of the community. Beyond its role as a retail space, the store became a gathering point, playing a central role in village life. It stands as a living reminder of the early days of settlement in the Kyogle region, symbolizing the tight-knit, rural community that depended on such establishments for both economic and social stability. Despite the modern development of the surrounding area, the store continues to be an important part of Wiangaree's heritage.

A significant chapter in the store's history unfolded after World War II when Basil "Chappy" Aboody and his wife Merle took over its management. Chappy, returning from military service, ran the store for 24 years, becoming a cornerstone of the community's identity. Under their stewardship, the store expanded its services to include a post office and liquor license, further solidifying its role as a vital community hub. The store also began to house a collection of local historical artifacts, transforming it into a kind of museum showcasing the area’s rich heritage.

Chappy and Merle were known for their personalized service, which included not only grocery deliveries but also providing support during times of hardship, such as floods and droughts. Their willingness to assist with local wildlife and their dedication to the community earned them a special place in the hearts of the residents. Chappy's extensive involvement in local affairs led to him being affectionately known as "The Mayor of Wiangaree."

The Wiangaree Store is more than just a commercial enterprise; it embodies the spirit of small-town life—service, compassion, and a strong sense of community. It remains an enduring symbol of Wiangaree's close-knit identity. For those interested in exploring its rich history in more detail, local historical records or the Kyogle Historical Society are excellent resources.
